Banner is confident that his plan will work - after all, who would be foolish enough to actually come looking for the Hulk? Summary: Can I admit that I actually enjoyed this story more than Planet Hulk and World War Hulk?
Comment: Is it possible to admit that you actually enjoyed the prelude portion of Planet Hulk and World War Hulk more than the actual events they spawned? Is it borderline heresy? Because I have to admit... that's how I feel. Maybe it's because this TPB collected both versions of the Hulk? There was a little of the mythic hidden suspenseful creature on Earth who always conflicts with Bruce Banner... there was also some of the intelligent war mongering sci-fi creature in space. There wasn't a boring moment in this TPB and it built up nicely for the Planet Hulk epic.
Prelude to Planet Hulk begins with Bruce Banner living the hermit lifestyle in Alaska. He dwells in such a remote location that his groceries are delivered on a single-engine plane. He is determined not to enter society again and endanger further people in his Hulk form. Some of the few friends he makes in this forced isolation encourage him to get out more and visit a nearby pub but wouldn't you know it - trouble always follows poor Bruce Banner.
Witnessing one of the gals in the bar being abused by a rough trucker type, Banner shuns his promise to not transform into the Hulk and saves her as well as making sure the trucker needs a hefty laundry fee to clean his pants. It's here that we discover S.H.I.E.L.D. had secret surveillance on Banner and was happy to bring him out in the open. Nick Fury approaches Bruce Banner and admits that the government needs his help. Hulk is one of the few lifeforms capable of sabotaging a rogue nuclear military satellite primarily because the ultra-ambitious device will not sense him as a threat since brutal strength is his only weapon.
Viewing this as a chance at redemption, Banner accepts the mission and is launched into space where he discovers that the entire mission was a trap. Earth has decided it no longer wants to deal with the catastrophes caused by the Hulk and will send him to a planet where he will no longer be a problem on their radar. The Hulk feels betrayed, screams for vengeance, and thus we have the Planet Hulk series.
It's a short read. I think Marvel felt a little guilty for trying to pawn a 4-issue TPB and included the Hulk bits from The Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe to justify the TPB's separate existence from the Planet Hulk TPB. This TPB combines the best of both worlds. Some of the elements that made Bruce Jones' run so popular and some of the elements that endeared fans to the Hulk after Grek Pak took the reigns. It's not mandatory reading to understand the events of Planet Hulk or World War Hulk, but it's necessary to complete your Hulk TPB collection.

Summary: A Hulk a fanboy would like
Comment: Story is over the top but entertaining at the same time. As with most comic book stories this one involves an "end of the world" theme, where the only one that can save the planet is the Hulk. The only piece of this that relates to Planet Hulk is the last couple pages where he's double crossed.
Overall an entertaining piece of work with average artwork.

Comment: This book was one of the best "Hulk" stories I've read in years. Beyond great art and great dialogue, it shows a real range of thought and emotion from the hulk, much more than what's normally covered in the average comic, cartoon series, t.v. show or even feature film. It begs the question, have Hulk and Banner begun to reconcile their odd relationship?
I can't wait for World War Hulk!

i'd suggest skipping this and reading the much better planet hulk.
if you're going to buy this buy it used and pay what you really should.

Summary: Worth the used price, not cover price.
Comment: There are many reviews that suggest the story in this book is taken care of adequeately enough in the first page of the Planet Hulk book. I didn't listen and bought this one anyway. Those reviews were true, this book is unnecessary if you plan on buying planet hulk, unless you want the information provided at the very end which has nothing to do with the story, it just explains much about many characters involved with the entire Hulk legacy. There is very very little if anything at all about the decision the Illuminati made to send the green giant away, just the implementation of their decision. If you're looking for that (which i was) look for the Road to Civil War book. It's in the beginning of that. The artwork in this is very nice and it's well written, but the story is short and unneccessary.
